Diller-Odell School History

Diller Community Schools and Odell Public Schools entered into a high school sports cooperative in the 1998-1999 school year.  The two former rivals joined together in all high school sports, which included football, volleyball, basketball and track. While the two schools still competed against one another for two years in other high school activities such as speech, music, quiz bowl and in junior high sports, the high school sports cooperative led to a smoother merger when the schools consolidated beginning with the 2000-2001 school year.

The Diller Eagles and the Odell Tigers had a number of common

traits.  Location, size, familiarity, and school colors to name a few.

The origin of the Diller-Odell mascot the “Griffin” is as simple as

combining the Eagle and the Tiger.  The Griffin is a mythical

animal that has the upper body of an eagle and the lower body

of a tiger or lion.

Both Diller and Odell had been traditionally classified as D or D2 by the Nebraska School Activities Association.  Throughout the sports cooperative and the consolidation, Diller-Odell Public Schools has been classified as C or C2, which is determined by the enrollment of students in grades 9-11.  This classification effects all high school sports and activities such as music and speech.

There have been many advantages to the students of Diller-Odell since the consolidation.  Students have been able to have more of a selection of classes academically and have seen an increase in clubs such as FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) and DOSADA (Diller Odell Students Against Drugs and Alcohol).  Athletically the school is able to offer an increased junior varsity schedule so younger students may gain experience if they are not yet ready for the varsity level.  Also, programs such as junior high football have been added for students’ enjoyment.
